The history of the Institute of Philology goes back to September 1st 1997, when the Faculty of Foreign Philology was created in the Mykolayiv branch of National University Kyiv Mohyla Academy. In 2000, the German Department was created, and in 2003 the first graduates got their degrees. In 2004, the Master degree programme of studies was accredited in the field of study “Language and Literature (English and German, English and French, German and French and world literature).” In 2005, the programme for the Department of Continuing Education was set up. Since 2006, professional training of Master of German Philology in the field of study “Language and Literature (English and German languages and world literature)” has been conducted. On September 1st the field of study “Translation” was established, as well as the correspondence course in the field of study “Language and Literature (English and German, English and French, German and French and world literature).” On September 1st the training in the field of study “Ukrainian Language and Literature. Foreign Language (English)” was started. On June 20th the Bachelor's programme in the field of study “Translation” was accredited, “Specialist” and Master’s programmes in the field of study “Translation” were also licensed. On September 1st, 2010, the Faculty of Foreign Philology was transformed into the Institute of Philology. In 2014, the Bachelor’s programme in the field of study “Journalism” was licensed. Thus, until 2016, the Institute has been functioning in the described composition.
