Faculty of Sociology
The history of the Faculty of Sociology at Petro Mohyla Black Sea National University begins in 2005. Professor N.B. Shust was the dean of the newly formed faculty which also included the following academic teaching staff: V.A. Voinalovych, M.O. Mintz, V.A. Fesenko, and N.V. Klimeniuk.
In 2007 the specialty “Sociology” was licensed. In 2008 students entered the Faculty of Sociology to get a bachelor’s degree for the first time. Nowadays students can also get a specialist’s and a master’s degree.
These days the dean of the Faculty of Sociology is I.A. Meyzhys, Dr. Sc. (Education), Professor. In 1996 she defended her doctoral thesis on “Socio-Psychological Basis of Library Service” at St. Petersburg Academy of Culture. She is a participant of numerous international seminars, of The Third and Fifth Congresses of the Russian Psychological Society, a member of St. Petersburg Branch of the Russian Psychological Society, a delegate of The First Congress of Social Psychologists of Ukraine, the author of over 70 scientific and methodological works, including 7 foreign publications printed in Finland and Russia.
The research and scientific activity of the Faculty of Sociology results in numerous publications of its lecturers in scientific journals, in their participation in international, national and university conferences, in profitable contacts with leading sociological services in the country and region as well as in participating in sociological researches involving students as future sociologists. In 2008 the faculty started to issue a scientific and methodological journal “Scientific Works”, the executive secretary of the editorial board of which is L.A. Lyapina.
In 2011-2012, with the help of the head of the department I.A. Meyzhys, dean L.A. Lyapina, senior lecturers L. Kalashnikova and A. Fesenko, a long term agreement with Mykolayiv Executive Committee was signed, according to which senior students are engaged into social research on topics relevant to the city as part of their diploma projects.
The cooperation of the Faculty of Sociology with the Public Opinion Research Centre “Naval Expert” (a leading sociological service) headed by L.P. Bilokon is very profitable. The Centre is a leading base that gives students the opportunity to practice.
The Sociological Research Centre operates at the Faculty of Sociology for over 5 years. It is headed by the dean L.A. Lyapina, who is a member of the Sociological Association of Ukraine. The Center focuses on the study of thoughts of university students and citizens about the urgent and controversial issues of socio-political and socio-cultural character. While making a comprehensive public opinion survey (“Omnibus”), the Center provides services in such surveys which come from the administration and the Academic Council of the university, public organizations, state and local authorities.
